Actually, I think the closest analogy would be that this is to articles as iStockPhoto is to photographs. Now, there are some pricing variables on Reporterist that don't exist on iStockPhoto, but the concept - a marketplace for editors and content providers - is pretty much the same.

I'm curious too about the writing on spec issue. I've been freelance for a long time, and have never written a story first, and then tried to sell it. Always sold it first. Am I missing something? Is this mainly for students or newbies?

Incredible idea. Bu why don't you change the heading of the article? The woman says right there that it's not meant to be another eBay, so you're misleading people.

I can't see why this model wouldn't work for pitching stories, as well as pitching pieces themselves on spec, though the emphasis on time-sensitive stories might preclude. I also see potential for stringers/reporters/writers to help each other identify the good editors/publications to work for with respect to interests, ethics and rates of pay.

Thanks for the write-up Jean.

We love the power of blogging and of all of the citizen journalism tools out there.

Gathering 'voices from the crowd' has always been an important part of journalism, and the tools available today make that increasingly easy to do. Blogging tools allow for easy digital expression, and all of the aggregating tools out there make it easy to collect those voices together.

But journalism is also about more than that. And we'd like to provide a platform and revenue model for those people who are willing to go (and passionate about going) the extra mile to dig deep on a story, or to actually go interview someone.

I hope you'll join us on this ride.
