<p>Newsroom staffs have dipped to their lowest levels since 1978, while audiences abandon once-trusted media outlets, which are no longer providing the news and information they want, according to the latest doom-and-gloom report on the journalism industry.</p>
<p>Newsroom cutbacks in 2012 reduced the industry by 30 percent since its peak in 2000, leaving fewer than 40,000 full-time professional employees, according to the Pew Research Center&#8217;s State of the News Media report for 2013.</p>
<p>The effects of these cutbacks on the news product are similarly dramatic. Sports, weather, and traffic now equal 40 percent of the content on local television news, and stories are getting shorter. Cable outlets have reduced their live coverage by 30 percent because of diminished crews, while live interview time has increased to fill the gap.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, more news outlets are turning to computer-generated journalism using algorithms from <a href="http://narrativescience.com/">Narrative Science</a> to transform data into stories.</p>

<p>OJR opens a new chapter today with a fresh look and even more of the content you’ve come to trust. Not only that, but we’re looking to involve the greater journalism community in the discussion. We are now accepting submissions from reporters and media observers who can offer keen insight into the future of news.</p>
<p>But first, the look. OJR has developed a reputation for thoughtful, in-depth reporting and commentaries on the changing media landscape. That focus remains the cornerstone of our brand. Front and center you will always find one of our signature reports or commentaries, and the latest offering is a perfect example. Geneva Overholser, director of the journalism school at our host institution, USC Annenberg, <a href="http://www.ojr.org/secrecy-is-trumping-public-interest-in-gun-control-coverage/">raises critical questions about the nature of public interest reporting</a> in a time when information is easier than ever to obtain but concerns over privacy threaten to muzzle discourse. Her focus is on the recent spate of government attacks on news organizations for publishing information about gun permit holders following the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn. Overholser draws on some hard-knock experience as an old-school journalist and editor and weaves in spot-on observations about how open data is changing the business to come up with a compelling argument for openness, as painful as it may be.</p>
<p>The first thing you’ll probably notice that’s different, aside from a new color scheme and masthead, is that conspicuous center column. This is a new department we’re calling The Repeater. Here you will find news and views from other outlets that we think are worth passing along.</p>
<p>Beyond the website, we recently launched a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/OnlineJournalismReview">Facebook page</a>. There, and <a href="https://twitter.com/ojr">on Twitter</a>, you will find more of the stuff we’re paying attention to that we didn’t have time to include in The Repeater.</p>
<p>With these advances, we will be able to build on our continuing commitment to help our readers understand and contribute to the revolution taking place in news.</p>
<p>And that’s where you come in. Defining online journalism has never been more interesting.  Is it about the ever more important role of data?  The burgeoning reporting potential of social media?  The ever-richer conversation between communities and journalism? The changing role of professionals amid the convergence of news platforms? We want to hear from you. Maybe you have a topic you’d like to see discussed, or maybe you have an article to pitch. Either way, we want to hear from you.</p>

<p>As a large, vibrant and diverse undergraduate and graduate School of Journalism, USC Annenberg is grappling with all these questions. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The tragic shootings in Newtown have prompted a lot of reflection (and finger-pointing) in the media, especially given the level of misinformation and confusion during that first terrible day. NPR senior strategist @acarvin offered a few jabs at traditional media when it seemed some outlets were relying on speculation over fact. But media critic Michael Wolff <a title="Did NPR's Andy Carvin overreach his Twitter calling on Newtown shooting?" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/dec/17/npr-andy-carvin-overreach-newtown" target="_blank">fired back in The Guardian</a>, singling out Carvin, who is known for his innovative use of social media to cover stories happening on the other side of the world (like the Arab Spring). Wolff made the case that new media mavens like Carvin are just as guilty of spreading misinformation as traditional media. But he also decried the &#8220;self-righteousness&#8221; of new media evangelists and made light of Carvin&#8217;s particular brand of journalism, which is to tap his massive following to fact-check and confirm. Carvin responded on Storify, <a title="In Response to Michael Wolff and The Guardian" href="http://storify.com/acarvin/in-response-to-michael-wolff-and-the-guardian" target="_blank">offering a paragraph-by-paragraph rebuttal</a>. The exchange highlights the uneasy place occupied by digital journalists in an industry where change seems almost to outpace their ability to create professional standards. Which view do you take?</p>

White men still occupy a majority of the top newspaper positions. Yang interviewed two newsies at opposite ends of the spectrum to get some ideas about how to keep working to balance the playing field so that more women and minorities get a shot at leading. &#8220;It may help to create relationships with organizations that provide support for women and minorities in journalism as avenues for awarding internships or jobs, or to reach out to individual university programs,&#8221; says 21-year-old college newspaper editor Kacey Gardner. Joseph H. Zerbey IV, president and general manager of the Toledo Blade at 70 years old, is a little more blunt: &#8220;First of all, stop making excuses. Over the last 40 or so years I have heard them all: &#8216;Well, there just aren&#8217;t enough of them qualified for that job.&#8217; &#8216;As soon as I hire a female, they take maternity leave.&#8217; &#8216;They just aren’t the fit the team needs.&#8217; &#8216;There aren’t enough minorities down in the ranks to bring along.&#8217; &#8230; They are out there. You have to work at it to find the right person, with the right fit, with the credentials and the work ethic to make it work.
