Sure, having a global photo library to choose from would be great, except for the fact that we'd havve a global photo library to choose from! Sometimes more choice is BAD. Nothing would ever get done because we would have too many choices. Maybe the story that goes with the article is not the BEST picture that could go with it, but it certainly would be one that works and fits well.

More than expanding a photo library to include everything, we should create photo libraries that include LESS. We should have more "specialized" photo albums, so that if you wanted a photo that specifically is used for ____, that would be a website in itself. Plus, not all photos need to be good, sometimes you want a bad photo--maybe for kitsch factor, who knows? That of course, should perhaps be its own website...badphotos.com!

The prospect of journalists publishing user-generated photos raises the question of authenticity: how will they validate that the image wasn't concocted in PhotoShop?

Magazines have long doctored images, especially women's magazines that airbrush years and pounds off celebrities, but also general interest magazines with reputations for journalistic integrity. Remember Time's infamous darkening of O.J. Simpson's cover photo, and National Geographic's repositioning of the pyramids? Why would photo editors expect any different from users? How would they know for sure?
