Robert Niles, Editor
Robert Niles is the editor of Japan Media Review and Online Journalism Review. He is also a journalism instructor at the USC Annenberg School for Communication. Robert got sucked into the Internet when computers and journalism collided in the early 1990s. A longtime math and computer geek, Robert had turned to journalism after graduating and deciding he couldn't stomach becoming a management consultant for Arthur Andersen. But the lure of marathon coding sessions proved too strong. Robert soon quit his job writing moderate-to-liberal editorials for a conservative newspaper that rarely published them, and he began making Web sites instead.

Robert started with an online tutorial showing other journalists how to use math and data, then branched out to niche sites on theme parks and classical music. These sites involve readers, inviting them to become correspondents contributing to the sites' coverage. The Online News Association honored Robert's Theme Park Insider in 2001 with an Online Journalism Award for Service Journalism. He has worked as a reporter, editor or online producer for the (Bloomington, Ind.) Herald Times, the Omaha World-Herald, the (Denver) Rocky Mountain News and the Los Angeles Times.
