Publish2: Capturing the power of the link

The Tribune Co. is rolling out virtually identical site templates across its news properties. See re-dos of Chicago Trib, Baltimore Sun and South Fla Sun-Sentinel.
I don't believe I've seen this kind of cookie-cutter approach applied so broadly to news sites before. At the risk of self-promotion, I blog about it at http://2ohreally.wordpress.com.
Wondering if others have found similar chain-wide examples, or thoughts about whether this tactic is wise. Strikes me that a corporate template is likely to stifle innovation at a time it's most needed.
