On June 11, 1998, Nyla Ahmad of The Discovery Channel Canada Online wrote what she called a "backgrounder" press review on Christian Valor, broadcast before the channel interviewed the alleged hacker. On the Web site, it is listed as a "story," with no other labeling. One section bears a strong resemblance to a Valor profile from April of that year by Adam Penenberg. DISCOVERY: "Valor claims that there's just too much child porn flying through the net for law enforcement to handle. On a busy day, a popular child porn chat channel offers 5,000 images. A Usenet group averages even higher, trading more than 7,000 a day. Valor says he can 'find a pedophile and trash his machine within 60 minutes,' while 'It would take law enforcement days, if not weeks, to accomplish the same thing.' " FORBES: "Valor argues that there are just too many who traffic in child porn on the net for law enforcement to handle. There are a dizzying number of Internet Relay Chat (IRC, a real-time chat network divided by topic) channels and Usenet newsgroups dedicated to adult porn, with a handful of them centered around child porn. On a busy day, a top group or channel offers 5,000 images. The "Child porn" Usenet group averages 7,700 images a day, with some days tapping out at 8,500, making it one of the most popular groups online. " 'I can find a pedophile and trash his machine all within 60 minutes," Valor says. "It would take law enforcement days, if not weeks, to accomplish this. I could snag more of them in one night than a D.A. could prosecute in his whole career.' " Further down in the Discovery story, there is a "media attention" link that goes straight to Penenberg's article.
