For better or worse, I devoted my career to one community and one community newspaper. There was good and bad to that: there are limitations at a small paper. But there are huge advantages: learning accountability (nothing like being confronted while grocery shopping) and the payoff of being an integral part of a complex community. We did good -- not great -- journalism, but dammit, we did stories that our readers would never get anywhere else.
