From news publisher to convener: Making the shift to build community in Iowa

Homepage: http://johnwilpers.wordpress.com
I have had an eclectic journalism career. I have started more free newspapers than any other U.S. editor. I ran AOL’s Digital City Boston for five years and kept it near the top of all of the service’s local sites. I’ve been on the editorial page of the Boston Globe, a columnist at the Boston Herald, and editor-in-chief of Ingersoll Publications (240 papers in 17 states), Community Newspapers (now Gatehouse New England), the TAB Newspapers, and the Bridgeport (CT) Post.
Recently, I have consulted at the LA Times, preparing to re-launch their “California/Local” area to include hundreds of neighborhood bloggers and more than one thousand LA-theme bloggers. At the recently shuttered BostonNOW free daily, I pioneered the inclusion of local bloggers throughout the website and in the theme-appropriate pages of the newspaper.
Beyond newspapers, my passions include a self-esteem building soccer program for 300 girls I created in 1996 (hotshotssoccer.org), surfing, and my 13-year run as “Mother Ginger” in the JMBT “Nutcracker” in Boston.
