I am a freelance journalist and photographer with special expertise in domestic and global public health, infectious disease and health policy. I have extensive experience reporting on disasters and in the developing world: I covered the Indian Ocean tsunami in Thailand and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and have reported from Africa, Asia and the Arctic. My first book, BEATING BACK THE DEVIL, is the only insider account of the US government's disease-detective corps; my second, SUPERBUG (coming in 2009) is on the rise of drug-resistant staph. I am also pursuing a multi-year project on the worsening crisis in US emergency rooms.
