'@2000+' lets the audience shape each show by various interactive features. Producer Risto Johnson says that interactivity creates 'a situation of real-time collectivity' between the audience, journalists and studio guests. 'Interactivity turns the audience into a resource of the program,' he says.
This is how '@2000+' gets the input from the audience:
E-mail: For each show there is a Web site with background information of the topic and guest experts as well as a form for sending in questions. Before and during the live show a background editor scans the incoming questions and feeds relevant ones to the host's PC screen to be taken into discussion. After the show, the answers are on the site as audio files.
SMS: During the show, a mobile-phone number is displayed on the television screen. Viewers can send in text-messages and they are treated like e-mails. This option is very natural in Finland, where there is a world-record penetration of mobile phones.
Online poll: Viewers' opinions of the topic are surveyed with a poll on each show's site and discussed in studio.
ISDN video conference: In each show some viewers can give their contribution using online video conference feature.
Webcam: Viewers can record their questions using webcam and send them in as attachments of an e-mail message. These are then played during the show.
Contests: In each show there are viewer contest and replies are expected by SMS or e-mail.
Discussion forum: There is '@2000+' discussion forum which is open also between the shows. Anybody can read the messages but for a contribution you must register.
