High Country News has long had great investigative and explanatory pieces. In fact, we just recently did a large, in-depth, explanatory piece of the gold mining industry's grip on Nevada politics. As it turns out, even in times of severe economic duress, raising any sorts of taxes beyond the pittance the industry currently pays (about 1 percent of its revenue) is politically impossible in the state, although there are grassroots efforts to change this.
Non-profit journalism seems to be a viable option in these dynamically changing times. However, African journalism still has its roots firmly based in the traditonal media. Due to the economic divide amongst its people, and the vast majority of illiterate and apathetic populations; we struggle to exploit the great opportunities online media offer us.

Operating in the non-profit arena has the benefit of lifting a load off the shoulders of participants. They can concentrate on reporting, writing, photography and editing without the responsibility of soliciting for ads, doing marketing, ascertaining the level of readership, opening bank account, paying taxes, etc.

Two groups I have been involved in since 1996 request a $20 annual contribution from members to cover incidental costs, glossy paper for copies of the front page that are posted around town and an annual party. Hey, it doesn't get any better than that.
