One thing that worked for us was choosing a good ad serving system. We had been utilizing OpenX and with 1 million views to our site a month, our Google ads were only making us a $100 to $200 a month. We switched to Google Ad Manager (free) and for whatever reason, we saw the $ skyrocket into the thousands each month. Even better when a hot story with a ton of traffic occurs. Apparently the ads weren't serving correctly with our old system.
