Sun appears to me that this study does not take into consideration the intellectual rights. Any reprint of a news story must be accompanied by a hyperlink to the source of origin. This proves respect for the source and prevent a possible dispute over intellectual property. Any self-respecting journalist should provide a link to the source from which the article, that if he is not the first source. So is it moral to do it.

Like the first comment I too have always been confused about hyper linking a word vs just putting [link] at the end of a sentence. Personally I find that I tend to ignore hyper linked words more. I think that because certain sites over using words to link to ads like Yahoo have led me to ignore them more.

Working for an online news website, we encourage our web journalists to hyperlink to "related" stories that will give the readers a background to the information being presented in the particular story so that whoever chooses to be more well informed has a convenient way of doing so. The basic idea is to provide "value" to the user. Sometimes, we also link to media galleries and videos where it makes sense.

I treated links as citations. If I wrote a sentence that the average intelligent reader would think needs to be unpacked -- for example, because it referred to a primary source or was obviously contextual -- I tried to link to the source or context. One issue I never resolved was whether to hyperlink a word (and then, whether to underline or otherwise make it pop) or to put the link at the end of the sentence, and if so whether to just say [link] or write a descriptive phrase about that link. Or, whether to put the link at the end of the graf, not the sentence (if the sentence did not end the graf). Any insights into format? Thanks!
