Local community newspapers will never die! I remember a jrn prof saying over & over that if local newspapers would stop trying to cover beyond the local community, they'd be fine. Now the new coined term, hyperlocal is all rage.
I find the question of "legitimacy" of hyperlocal news an interesting one. I am the lead developer of a website that is a platform for creating online newspapers. Our service is free, and as a result it has attracted a very wide range of writing talent -- from future Pulitzer prize winners to the barely literate. For me, legitimacy is about quality and not much else. Whether a newspaper is online or not, whether it has a dozen writers or just one, whether it has advertising or not, has little to do with legitimacy. If a newspaper produces well-researched and well-written stories, it's legit. If it doesn't, it's not.

Good article, Melanie! Do you think hyperlocals have become "legit?" I know few hyperlocal publishers who feel that way within the greater news community.
