No doubt this comes as a rude shock for many who prepared for a career in journalism and have plied their trade for years. But like the elevator operator and the gas station attendant, some jobs virtually disappear when technology overtakes them.

I had a different take on this strip arc: Trudeau just discovered blogs? As a comic theme, or as pop culture, or what, exactly? It was just odd to have blogging suddenly appear as if it was new!

And my first thought was the same as yours, Robert: why didn't his son link to him?!

Thanks for including your wife's experience on writing long posts. I really do fight to make them shorter, but here's what I've noticed: many if not most blogs just link to someone else. I do my own reporting a lot, so of course it includes, like, real facts and quotes. Still, my park blog is not the most popular. :(

Also, in LA it's considered rude to ask for a link. I've done it a couple times, to bigger blogs - one person said okay, so that was good.

"Seriously, though, many, if not most bloggers, have a rough patch early as they work to get in tune with their own publishing rhythm, as well as their audience's. The best time to work through that is when you are working in a supportive group environment. It's real tough when you are on your own and under financial pressure to deliver an audience."

What you say is all true, but in the case of Rick Redfern, what many bloggers do not have is a name in the publishing industry or the amount of contacts that most if not all reporters have. That would be a tremendous edge that any "typical" blogger would love to have.

The nice thing is that a lot of high powered people, companies and so on are really starting to take the blogging culture seriously. Thanks to big boys like Tech Crunch and Gizmodo(plus a couple hundred more), announcing yourself as a blogger to potential business contacts is much easier than it used to be.

Besides, everyone knows that the real money is in blogging!:-)

fun post--but Rick Redfern did have to blog while he was still at the Post! He wrote a blog while covering the campaign, but just "couldn't get the hang of it," he told Joanie a couple of months ago.
